best day ever

Kerigan's 2nd birthday was the best day ever!
I set up a little princess dress up area and we had a few of Kerigan's little friends come over for a party!  I was kind of nervous about this one because I kind of threw it together last minute and mostly on my own.  Craig was working that night (but we didn't want boys there anyway!  Ha!)  My good friend Emily who doesn't have a daughter, but 4 adorable boys, actually drove to my house to pick up Andrew, take him out to eat and to play, and then brought him back so I didn't have to worry about him.  You were a life saver- thanks Em!   It was important to me to have a party because it was our last party in our old house.  A week before we moved!
Many people thought I was nuts to go to all this work right before we moved, but I really wanted to make the day special for my girl.  It's not her fault her birthday landed right in the middle of the busiest part of the summer for us!  I had fun making the invitations, although braiding each braid was a bit tedious, but it was totally worth it!
I wanted to do so much more than what I had time for, but I tired to do the best I could with what I hadn't packed yet!  I thought this looked like a lantern so I strung some lights inside it and found the "Dream" sign on clearance at Target (there's a song in Tangled called "I have a dream" and Rapunzel dreams of getting out of her tower to see the world).

We had the perfect house to throw Rapunzel's braid over the ledge in the entryway!
I served the food in frying pans (what Rapunzel uses in the movie) and the kids had fun building "Tower kabobs" and eating off a stick!
We had bread braids (and no, I didn't have time to get creative and bake them from scratch like the moms on Pinterest, so we just braided the pilsbury stuff and they were delicious!).  We had ham, cheese, summer sausage, fruit and pretzel braids.
This was my favorite kind of party!  We asked the little girls to come dressed as their favorite princess, and we also had dress up clothes to play in!  They decorated a picture with stickers and princess foam shapes, which is something all little kids enjoy at this age!  Each girl got a wand they could decorate too.

We had a couple of princess tents (one I borrowed and one I got super cheap) and they were a hit!
The girls loved playing in them!
What is it about a tent that's so exciting?  Ha!
This is Kerigan's sweet "big girl" friend Norah, my friend Andrea's daughter.  She is so sweet and fun to have around, and a huge helper with the younger kids (she and Andrew are the same age, 3 months apart) and Kerigan loves her.  I love how she's looking at her!

The girls had so much fun eating in the dining room!  I don't think in the 8 years we have lived there that I ever let the kids eat in there.
At least not a whole bunch of them at a party!  Ha!  I figured oh well, we might as well enjoy our house since it wouldn't be ours for much longer!
The food was so easy and the kids all loved it.  It was definitely simple, and if I had more time I would have probably done more, but this was perfect!

Kerigan got lots of nice gifts from her little friends.  Lots of princess stuff, which she loves!
The cake was my favorite part.  A teacher my mom works with does cakes and I've started asking her to do my kids cakes because she is fabulous!  I hadn't seen a more perfect Rapunzel cake.  Kerigan was in awe.

She said "sing happy birthday to me!"  Ha!  She loved hearing everyone sing to her.
Mt friend Erin took this and I love it because it shows the cake really well and my attempt at decorating the island.  I just put twinkle lights under it and covered it with a purple tablecloth and it looked really cute.
She was talking about Rapunzel being up in there!  Ha!
I loved this little sassy look!
My little princess
This is Kerigan's little friend Lainey.  Her brother is also named Andrew and has the same heart defect as our Andrew.  Their family has become friends with ours through our heart boys!  I love that Erin and I had our girls a month apart!
This just cracks me up.  These are two of her best little school friends Isabelle and Irish.  I love how they are smiling and Kerigan is making a face!  Ha!
More tent fun!

Peek a Boo!
My mom got Kerigan this beautiful Rapunzel dress and shoes from the Disney Store.  Kerigan loves it and wants to wear it every day!  I realized I didn't get a picture of her shoes, but her dress covered them up!  I'll have to get pictures another time.
This was so funny, after everyone left Erin and Lainey stayed later and the boys had a rocket launching show for us in the backyard.  Lainey and Kerigan were topless and cheering for them with dress up shoes!  Ha!  Funny girls.
Thanks to my mom, all of my friends and Kerigan's little friends who helped make it special!  Our last birthday party in our house was one we will always remember.

As Rapunzel would say... it was the BEST DAY EVER!

two fun!

Kerigan, my sweet little dolly.  How did I blink and you have become this beautiful, smart, adorable and funny little girl who has completely stolen my heart?
With each passing day, and as you grow more and more my sweet daughter, I can't even begin to tell you how much I love you and how I love spending girly time with you!  You are so fun to "hang out" with, even at 2.  You communicate like a 3 year old, and you can easily carry on a conversation with me.
You say such funny things, speaking so clearly and in complete 6+ word sentences.  You pretty much speak in paragraphs!  Ha!  Sometimes you never stop talking!
At your 2 year check up you were 35" tall (86%) and 26 lb (52%).  You wear mostly 2T clothes although I am only buying 3T now, size 6 shoe and size 5 diaper.  But I have a feeling you won't be in diapers much longer because you are pretty much potty training yourself!
Mommy isn't really ready yet.  And I was holding off until we moved to really dive in and try something new with so much transition in your life right now, but you are handling the move like a champ.  You have been taking your pants and diaper off at nap time and once went potty (#2!) in your bed.  I had to laugh because when I came to get you, you were on the opposite end of the crib and looked totally disgusted, where your brother would have dug right in and smeared it everywhere!  Ha!
I think I am holding you back from doing it because your brother was the worst experience I've ever had in potty training!  Ha!  I am hoping you can prove to me that it isn't so hard!  We are going to move forward with it when Bubba goes to school in a couple of weeks.  I think you will be very happy to pull out your princess panties I got you!
Speaking of princesses, you are in love with them.  You absolutely are the girly-girl I have always dreamed about and while you will happily run around outside and play in the dirt, you want to do it wearing your dress up high heels and jewelry!

You know almost every princess by name and most of their movies.  You will sit mostly through Tangled and Cinderella, you also love Beauty and the Beast and Ariel.  You love playing in your room with your dress up clothes and shoes and jewelry.  It's probably your favorite thing to do right now.
You also love books and puzzles and playing with your baby.  You are a little mother and will sit in the chair and rock your dolls and baby.
I love to watch you interact with your dolls because you are just so sweet and gentle.  You also love your princess castle and you will put the princesses on to make the songs play and you will dance around and around the family room.
You put your hands over your mouth and act so surprised every time the song comes on.  Your favorite song is "I See the Light" from Tangled.  You know a lot of the words and love to sing along and dance to it.  This video is worth the watch!  (I always try to keep them short- this was over 5 minutes but I cut it down so it would entice you to at least get through the first minute, trust me you won't be able to stop watching!)  My favorite part is Andrew giggling, and when the princess says "My name is Rapunzel" you say "My name is Kerigan!"  Ha!  Be sure and pause the music on the blog at the bottom.

Speaking of growing up- you surprised mommy by completely getting rid of your paci earlier this summer before you even turned 2.  You were so addicted to that thing, I thought we would never get it away from you.  My goal was going to be when you turned 2 I would try it.  But I had read somewhere to just not make a big deal of it and just say it is all gone so that is what I did when you would ask for it.
You mostly cried in the car but one time in the car I really didn't have one so I couldn't give it to you.  That was when I realized you didn't really need it because you eventually stopped crying and forgot about it.  I still always gave it to you at night but it got to where you weren't even asking for it, I was just giving it to you, so one night I didn't.
And you didn't ask!  You went right to sleep and slept through the night perfectly.  So the next night we did it again.  You might have taken it some nights and not others at first, and it was a gradual weaning- but after a couple of weeks you never asked for it again.  I was so shocked and thrilled!  It was so easy!
Once again you just proved to mommy what a big girl you are, all on your own.
You have such a funny little personality.  You are stubborn and feisty and very sassy!  This is what you did when I was trying to make you smile!  Ha!
And my favorite picture ever!  You were rocking your photo shoot and Bubba jumped in and you were not happy.  You adore your brother, but you also love the attention you get (because seriously?  Look how cute you are!)  You normally want to do whatever Andrew is doing.  I have learned I can no longer give him something without you noticing and wanting it too, whether it's food, a toy, etc.  Nothing gets by you!
I love moments like these!  Most of the time, you and Andrew play nicely together.  He loves it when you are in the "mood" to wrestle and play!  You will run up to him and throw your arms around his neck and he falls back on the floor and you just giggle and laugh so hard.
Sometimes Andrew will pull you down in a choke hold, which normally you think is fun, but other times you will scream and cry and shove him away!  We never know what mood you will be in.  He was trying to hold your hand and be sweet to you in these pictures and you were not having it!
It was so funny the other day you were grouching at him and pushing him away and he wanted to play with you.  I had to tell him you weren't in the mood.  A little while later, you were giving him hugs and playing and Andrew said "NOW she's in the mood for love!"  Ha!
Let's just say you're a girl who knows what you want!

I think one of my favorite things about you being two are the little friends you have made in your Ladybug class at "school."  I think it is so precious how you talk about your friends at home, and when I drop you off at school they all run to you and say "Hi Kerigan!"
You were all standing here so cute on the playground having a little chat!  Ha!  This is Kenna and Isabelle, two of your best friends.
I have been so nervous and apprehensive about moving you away from your home and your sweet little friends at school.  I always pray that as you grow up you will make special life long friendships and that you choose your friends wisely.  Friendships are so important for girls and I always pray that you will have a group of special friends circling around you someday.
Kerigan, people say there's no such thing as "perfect."  But you are perfect to me!  I never expect you to be perfect because I know you will make mistakes and that's okay.
But no matter what, you will always be my perfect little baby girl.  You came into our lives at the perfect time, and you have filled our lives with more happiness than we ever thought was possible.
Our favorite saying of yours is that when we ask you a question like "Kerigan, are you _______?"  Your response is always "I'm not ______, I'm just a big girl!"  For example when we say
"Kerigan, are you a princess?"  You say...
"I'm not a princess... I'm just a big girl!"

And you couldn't be more right.  We love you to the moon and back baby girl!  You'll always be our baby, no matter what!

And just for fun...
Look what a difference a year makes!  The past two years have been the best in my life because of you, sweet girl!  How blessed we are!

third time's a charm

Ok, so I've been playing catch up the past few days with blogging, but for some reason I am still about seven updates behind and can't seem to catch up (maybe it's because we keep doing things faster than I can blog about them!)  But this update is one that I've been needing to do for a while, and people are starting to ask about our move, so I'm just going to squeeze it in and then back date everything else.  Like Kerigan's 2nd birthday last Friday.  Yes, we still had a party, even though the house is getting boxed up and we are moving in a week.  Yes, I'm a little crazy.  But more on that coming soon...

(I found this online and it just spoke perfectly to our situation)

So.  This story needs to be told.  It is the story of how our house sold.  I think it is significant for so many reasons, but it's just another one of those stories that reminds you that we are not in charge, and that when you trust God, even in the difficult times, He still proves that He is there.

It started with Craig's new job, which you can read about here.  We knew the time had come to put our house on the market.  This house holds so many memories for me that it has been somewhat of a bittersweet feeling.  More on those memories also coming soon, but for now, let's suffice it to say that the selling of our home and buying a new home has been no easy road.

April 1st we put it on the market.  Craig's job began July 1, so our "plan" (Ha!  It's not our plan, is it?) was to be moved in and settled before then.  Have Kerigan's birthday party combined with a housewarming party in our new home.  Have the summer to settle in, find doctors and day care and meet neighbors, principal, and get acclimated to town.  The days kept dragging on, the showings kept happening, but we weren't getting any offers.  We lowered our price considerably just to compensate for the unfinished basement and lack of a 3 car garage which were our biggest strikes according to the feedback we received.

Meanwhile, perhaps too soon, we began looking for the perfect home for our family.  We were excited.  We fell into the hands of a very perfect realtor, who I like to think of as my "twin" as we have so much in common and she is also a former teacher.  She not only appreciated but she understood my list of "wants" in a house.  She knew which ones I'd like and which ones I wouldn't.  A match made in heaven!  We saw well over 25 houses.  It was funny because the very first one we saw, was the first time we had met our realtor.  We had the kids with us and we couldn't really concentrate very well.  I remember getting back in the car and crossing it off the list right away.  The main reason was because it had only 2 bedrooms upstairs and we needed 3.  There was a 3rd bedroom on the main level (not the master) and 2 more in the basement, but I just didn't think it fit our needs.  There were definite things I loved about it though...

So after another month of looking for the perfect house, we weren't finding much.  Building was out of the question because of the timing and the expense.  Andrew kept asking us about "that first house we saw."  He had loved it.  He and Kerigan had played and ran around in the finished basement and had a ball.  We kept brushing him off and telling him that we weren't getting that house and were looking at others.  But he was so persistent.  And we just weren't finding anything else.  And so one day on a whim, I asked to see the house again.  I just felt this push to go back and see it.  This time after having a closer relationship with our realtor and without the kids in tow.  When we walked in it for the second time, I knew we had come full circle and this was the house where we belonged.  I knew that if God meant for us to have the house, that Andrew would be okay sleeping on the main level and it would all work out.  So we made an offer.  And it was accepted with a counter offer we couldn't refuse and contingent on the sale of our current house.

So now the waiting game began.  We had a house ready to move into, we just needed to sell ours.  The sellers of our home gave us until June 1 to sell ours.  Time was ticking.  The question became, would they extend our offer another month, because June 1 was drawing near.

On the day of June 1, we had a showing.  It was a beautiful Saturday afternoon.  The kids and I went to Craig's brothers house to hang out while we waited, as we had done many times before.  Craig was at work.  Following the showing, we headed back home and I put Kerigan down for a nap.  I made lunch for Andrew (hence, "messing" up the perfectly tidy house I had created prior to the showing).   About 20 minutes later, I got a phone call from our realtor, asking if they could come back and look again.  The lady she was showing it to had sold her house unexpectedly fast, and she needed to find a house that day and she loved ours.  My heart almost leaped out of my chest as I panicked that Kerigan was still sleeping in her room.  Our realtor told us not to worry, and if Andrew and I could go outside they would only be a few minutes.
(I took this picture of her when she woke up that day.  And I love that she's wearing a rainbow shirt...like lucky charms!  Totally not planned.)

So... our little good luck charm continued napping and Andrew rode his bike around the block a few times.  It felt very strange leaving my baby in the house without me, but I trusted our realtor and I just went with my gut.  Once they left, they headed straight back to her office to write an offer, exactly what we were asking.  I was ecstatic and couldn't believe it.  June 1.

So for about 2 weeks we happily began packing box after box and preparing to move.
We were going to be in before July 1 so Craig would have plenty of time to paint rooms and help us move and get organized.  Then the phone call came.  Our realtor.  Our sale had fallen through.  The lady's buyers buyers (if that makes sense) had lost financing, so everyone's house had to go back on the market.  Including our "meant to be" home I loved.  Everything became contingent on either us selling to someone else, or the same lady selling her house to someone else.  So now we not only had our showings to worry about, but hers too!

After one day back on the market, and one showing, we sold again.  I couldn't believe it.  It felt "too good to be true."  And it turns out that it was.  But for 2 more weeks, we went about packing more and more, taking our house apart, certain that we were really moving this time.
The call came again from our realtor.  This time, our current buyers had lost financing.  Can I just tell you how furious I was by this point?  How can this happen twice?!  And why are these people out making offers on houses they aren't qualified to buy?  I was beside myself.  And by this point our house was in no condition to go back on the market.  Imagine the countless boxes taking over the house, and all my decorations packed inside.  Not to mention my little "helpers" who conveniently leave a trail of destruction wherever they go!
(But mama, I always clean it up!  And in Cinderella's glass slippers to boot)

It now was just a house with walls, with no "personality."  I was devastated and sure it wouldn't sell again that easily.  I was also angry with all the weeks we had missed out on being on the market thinking we had sold, when it could have sold to someone reliable in the meantime.

Let me tell you, I had NO idea selling and buying a home was this hard.

When I let our realtor know that our house was going back on the market a second time, she complicated it more by telling me that there was a family who really wanted the house we had an offer on in our new town, that was just waiting to sell their house.  And they had just sold it.  I was pretty sure at this point that we were going to lose our house, since it had to go back on the market.  The house Andrew was so proud to say he "picked out" for our family.  I was in tears.  Reluctantly looking online again trying to find the perfect house when I knew it already existed and we were going to lose it.

So many times during this process I had to stop and think that whatever God wanted to happen was going to happen.  That if we lost our house, then it would be meant to be and something better would be there.  It was so hard to think that way.  But there were many nights of prayer when I was stressed to my breaking point.  I had nowhere else to turn but to the One who had the answer.

God answered when we learned that the family who wanted our house was on vacation for 10 days.  Most likely they weren't going to throw an offer in while they were on vacation.  So the 10 day wait began.  After about 8 days, we got word that the original lady who had wanted our house, had sold hers.  It was a miracle.  Everything had worked out according to His plan.

Craig has already started his job.  He's been commuting 45 minutes twice a day, which he is already used to doing, and he is relishing in the fact that he won't have to for much longer.  The timing didn't work out the way we had thought.  But when we learned our closing date was July 24, I just smiled.

Those of you who have read this blog for a while know about that date.  It really is an update all in itself, but seeing as how I've already written a book I'll just say that July 24 is my mom and dad's wedding anniversary.  It is also the day my dad passed away, on their 32nd anniversary.  It is the same day that when I had just become pregnant with Andrew, we learned that the baby had no heart beat, and we thought we lost him.  Obviously we didn't, and someone was looking out for us.  I do believe that God and dad are working together up there.  And my dad did have the best sense of humor of anyone I ever knew.

So for those of you who have been wondering about our move... we close on July 24.  We are allowed early entry into the house this coming weekend to start moving our things in ahead of time.  This couldn't be worse timing for us... I had scheduled swimming lessons for Andrew this week, along with Kerigan's 2 year check up.  Not to mention Kerigan's birthday party last week and an out of town wedding this weekend.  Oh yeah, and I am cramming several doctor and dental appointments in for the kids and I before we move, and I found out I have 4 cavities after a 6 year hiatus from seeing the dentist.  They just said I was lucky it wasn't worse.  I just shook my head at the irony and we just keep packing.

July 24 is God's perfect timing.  And just another reason I know that this whole thing was meant to be.

I get it, God.  It's all about YOU.
